Guatemala has three main regions: the cool highland which has the highest population, the tropical area along the Pacific and Caribbean coasts, and the tropical jungle in the northern lowlands. Guatemala's neighboring countries are Mexico on the north and west, and Belize, Honduras, and El Salvador on the east. During this time of the year they have rain and thunderstorms. The best time to visit is November-April. During those months there is less rain. In the summer it's cooler in the mountains, and hot and humid in the lowlands (especially on the Pacific coast). When you visit you should take a sweater and long-sleeved shirt for the evenings and a jacket for Guatemala City. In September, when tropical storms move in from the Caribbean, it can rain for days on end.

Guatemala- Comida

Guatemalans enjoy traditional food, home cooked and made with fresh ingredients. Although international fast-food chains are becoming popular in some of the larger cities, most of the people in this Central American nation still don’t care for it, preferring traditional meals. On of the meals is Kak'ik. Kak’ik is a thick, spicy turkey stew made in the highlands, particularly those where the Ki’che culture is still strong. It takes all day to cook and is a real treat for those visitors who get the chance. In addition to turkey, ingredients include achioIe, cilantro, garlic, tomatoes and dried peppers.

Guatemala- Un poco de todo

About 600 BC the Maya lowlands experienced a large and rapid population increase. The area, which was dotted with hundreds of small farming communities. Powerful chiefdoms emerged about 400 BC. These chiefdoms were based at various sites, including El Mirador, Tikal, Cerros, Becan, and Dzibilchaltun which developed into ceremonial and population centers with tens of thousands of residents. Enormous temple platforms and spacious plazas were built to reflect the power and authority of the Maya rulers. Pottery and other crafts were created by specialized artisans and were uniform throughout the area.

La Quema del Diablo (The Burning of the Devil) is on 7 December each year. The town and cityfolk clear their homes of all useless stuff such as old clothes. At 6pm the piles are burned and crowds of people gather round to celebrate an ancient tradition. Guatemalans strongly believe that by burning the rubbish they are purging their homes and towns of evil.
